Meet the Seller – Jacques and Karli from designosaurYEAH

Here are two bright young things working on a new lil’ brand and making some fab, bold and fun jewellery. Focusing on laser cutting acrylic and wood, their work is dinosaur crazy but fresh and young and far from jurassic…

Please introduce yourself….

ROAR! We are designosaur, headed up by Jacques and Karli.

Describe the products you currently make to sell

We make acrylic and wood laser cut jewellery of our prehistoric friends, as well as a few other bits and pieces that take our fancy. Check us out at www.etsy.com/shop/designosaurYEAH

Where and when do you design and make your products?

We both have two jobs, so in the hours when we should be sleeping is when the designing and assembling occurs! Jacques works at Brighton and Hove Plastics – Laser Cutters, (http://www.brightonandhoveplastics.co.uk/) so our designs are created there and then everything else, designing, cleaning, chaining up, and boxing up happens at home!

How long have you been selling your wares and how did it begin?

We started just before Christmas selling the Duke of York brooches, and then Christmas decorations. It’s only been since February that we have got our name and branding and have been focused on dinosaurs. It all started because Jacques was working at a laser cutters and was asked to make mirrors for children. I loved the dinosaur he brought home in shiny mirrored acrylic and joked about it being an awesome necklace! (I have a serious jewellery problem, anything big, brash and normally plastic is my style.)

What drew you to the Brighton area, if you are not a ‘native’?

We both studied Product Design at the University of Sussex and have stayed in Brighton since. It’s much nicer being by the seaside!

What inspires the things you make?

Dinosaurs! And then after that, extinct animals, fun things we see, colours, sparkles, anything and everything really! Jacques does the designing at the moment, but I tend to say “Oooo I think a necklace that looks like this would be a good idea,” and then Jacques has designed it before I even get a chance to pick up a pencil. Jacques obviously has his own ideas too and eventually I will start designing my own pieces. At the moment, branding and marketing is taking up my time and Jacques doesn’t enjoy that side of things, so we make a good team!

Personal motto?

RAWR doesn’t mean ‘I Love You’ in dinosaur, it means “I’m going to bite your head off”

Thank you, it is so nice to meet you and your jewellery, the Designosaur necklace is so quirky and right up our street, we can’t wait to come and try it on…

Product Highlight: British-themed designs by Claire Montgomery

We’ve got more of the Jubilee/Olympics theme with today’s product highlight. And in honour of the fact that the Jubilee and the Olympics are the reigning double act of 2012, rather than just a single item we have two lovely hand-drawn designs from Claire Montgomery, which will be available over a whole range of products.

How amazing is that happy corgi?

These designs celebrate being British and are a limited edition for the Jubilee and London 2012 celebrations. They are available as greeting cards, pocket mirrors, cotton bags and badges. All at very reasonable prices, starting from 60p for a badge to £6 for a large cotton bag.

Claire will have a stall at the Brighton Craftangaza market on Tuesday 5th June. You can also visit her blog at clairemariemontgomery.wordpress.com, or email her at: sayhello@clairemontgomerydesign.com to order products. We’ve also done a Meet the Seller interview with her on this very blog, which you can read here.

Product Highlight: Jubilee Cushions from her indoors

Are you a London lover? Whether you’re an authentic Cockney or you’ve never been to the Big Smoke, you’re bound to love these cute cushions, today’s product highlight from her indoors.

The cushions are both £30.00 each and are hand knitted in 100% merino wool, they come with an 18″ duck feather pad, which is included in the price. I love the tiny London buses and the patriotic crowns, recreated in knitwear for your home! If you check out the her indoors Etsy shop, you’ll also see some rather fine scarves featuring the same motifs.
Tess of ‘her indoors’ will be taking part in the Brighton Craftaganza on Monday 4th June, so head down then to get your mitts on these Jubilicious cushions. You can also read a ‘Meet the Seller’ interview with her here.
